There is not doubt that soccer is one of the most important passions in the latino community. The World Cup is one of the events most waited for soccer lovers and for every single person from the country playing at the World Cup.

World Cup 2018, which is played in Russia, has been an example of how Latinos unite during the event. The teams playing from Latin America have brought tears, smiles and joy to millions of people around the world. Peru was classified after 36 years without going to a WorldCup, and even though it did not pass to the next round, thousands of fans welcomed them back home with a tremendous joy.

The countries from Latino America that got to the next round are: Argentina, Uruguay, Brasil, Mexico, and Colombia. The two first games were on Saturday, and Argentina was eliminated with a score of 4-3 against France, and Uruguay, which won against Portugal.

The next games are: Brazil and Mexico this Monday at 10am, and Colombia vs England, on Tuesday at 2pm.

The winner of this year’s Hispanic Athlete of the Year Award was David Villa, NYCFC Major
League Soccer. The recipient of the Hispanic Media Award was NFLeros Fox Deportes.

The awardee of the Hispanic Leadership Award was Ish Arebalos of the Coca Cola Company. There were two local awardees this year with the Hispanic Broadcaster award going to Carmen Contreras and the Community Service award to N.D.Kalu Sports Talk Radio Host 790 AM Houston, TX.

The 4th annual Game Week KickOff Celebration took place in the beautiful Super Bowl host city of Houston, TX where the event was well attended by members of the media, sport and business community. The event’s generous sponsors included Inca Kola, Coca Cola, Fox Deportes, which broadcasted their “En Vivo” segment live from the event venue. This year sponsors included The Coca Cola Company, Inca Kola, Fox Deportes, IBM, United Airlines, and The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce ( USHCC). The Funds raised during the event will benefit the Friends of Lead Free Children (FLFC) foundation as our community beneficiary in recognition of the important work that it performs within our communities by creating a healthier and safer environment for our children to achieve their fullest potential.

La participación de 4 colombianos, que quieren ser reconocidos como “Súper Humanos”, es motivo de orgullo. Sergio Iván Minas, Leonardo Barón, Pierry D. Ramírez Guerrero y Cristian E. Torres Ortiz, fueron la representación de Colombia en la famosa Maratón de Nueva York que se llevó a cabo el pasado domingo 6 de noviembre, dejando en claro que las discapacidades físicas no son un impedimento para lograr los sueños.

Los ex militares del ejército nacional, quienes a causa del conflicto armado en Colombia perdieron alguna de sus extremidades, participaron este domingo en la maratón de Nueva York, donde demostraron su alto nivel competitivo, alcanzando posiciones dentro de los 20 mejores en la competencia. Sergio Iván Minas y Leonardo Barón alcanzaron el 3ro y 4to lugar en el escalafón.

Estos atletas han participado en diferentes competencias alrededor del mundo incluyendo paraolímpicos y maratones, para ellos la de Nueva York era un reto y una preparación para las competencias futuras. Por su parte Pierry Ramirez, quien lidera el grupo dijo, “mis compañeros me han dado la oportunidad de liderarlos y ser la cabeza visible de Achilles International Colombia”, organización que desde 1976 ha luchado por la participación en competencias de alto nivel de atletas discapacitados alrededor del mundo.

El Consulado de Colombia en Nueva York brindó apoyo logístico, felicitó y destacó a los cuatro atletas colombianos, quienes representaron por todo lo alto a Colombia en la Maratón de Nueva York. Por todo esto y lo que han logrado son un ejemplo y un orgullo nacional.
