Films “Embrace of the Serpent” and “Ixcanul” lead Platino Awards with 8 nominations

Colombian adventure drama film “Embrace of the Serpent” and Guatemalan-French drama “Ixcanul” snagged eight nominations each Thursday ahead of the third edition of the Platino Prizes, followed by “The Club” and “The Clan” with six apiece and “Truman” with five.
The nominees for the top honor, Best Ibero-American Film, are “Embrace of the Serpent” (Original title: El abrazo del serpiente), “The Club” (El club), “The Clan” (El clan), “Ixcanul” and “Truman,” organizers said at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and Buenos Aires.
The nominees for the best actor Platino are Spain’s Javier Camara and Argentina’s Ricardo Darin, who are sharing the nod for “Truman”; Chile’s Alfredo Castro for “The Club”; Mexico’s Damian Alcazar for “Magallanes”; and Argentina’s Guillermo Francella for “The Clan.”
Three Spaniards are in the running for the best actress prize – Penelope Cruz for “Ma Ma,” Elena Anaya for “The Memory of Water” (La memoria del agua) and Inma Cuesta for “The Bride” (La novia). Chile’s Antonia Zegers for “The Club” and Argentina’s Dolores Fonzi for “Paulina” were also chosen in that category.
The nominees for best director are Alonso Ruizpalacios (Gueros), Cesc Gay (Truman), Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent), Pablo Larrain (The Club) and Pablo Trapero (The Clan).
Among the filmmakers behind the movies nominated for best picture, only Jayro Bustamante (Ixcanul) did not get a best director nod.
The Platino Prizes debuted in April 2014 in Panama City, with the Chilean film “Gloria” garnering five trophies, while the second gala took place in July of last year in Marbella, Spain, and ended with “Relatos Salvajes” (Wild Tales), a Spanish-Argentine production, taking home eight awards.
The Platino awards, which are organized by EGEDA, the Spain-based Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Association, and the Ibero-American Federation of Audiovisual Producers, or FIPCA, and are aspiring to become the Oscars of Ibero-American cinema, aim to make up for a lack of promotion for Ibero-American films and serve as a platform for the region’s productions and talent.
The third edition of the Platino Prizes will take place on July 23 in Punta del Este, Uruguay.
