As holiday season approaches, I’m trying to bring you a great makeup look. Let’s talk about beauty tips that models use today. Let me share with you some tips straight from the runway show:

Having worked as a fashion stylist, fashion producer/show director and fashion editor to MY Lifestyle Magazine at runway shows in New York, Miami and Colombia, I meet so many great makeup artists and I wanted to share some non-commonly discussed, standard operating backstage procedures to shed some light on what a pro does to make a model look “beautiful” and “runway ready.” You’ll finally be able to nail that look and you’ll be totally irresistible.

You may actually get some nice tips from this list, and some of these tricks may make you gasp. Mostly, though, I hope this will be a healthy reality check for any woman who’s ever felt frustrated about the way she looks in the bathroom mirror, or for anyone who has ever compared herself to a model. I hope that by pulling back the curtain on how the fashion industry really works, women might be inspired to be a little kinder to themselves.

Bare Face

Start out with your bare face! I exfoliate my face and lips and then I put on moisturizer and lip balm. My makeup artist friend Grace Mastrodomenico agrees with me on this!

Grace Mastrodomenico says: Even when a model swears she already cleaned her face, I always find remnant makeup from the show before or the night before. Leftover makeup really makes women look a lot worse than most realize. So I spend time cleansing off every bit.

Foundation

A stimulating skin massage helps bring back a beautiful radiance. Sometimes it has to be lightening fast, but this step matters. Often models have skin that’s wrecked. (Yes, really it is.) Fashion Week is actually four weeks of back-to-back shows that travel from New York, London, Milan and to Paris. And this entire stretch happens twice a year.

The first week, the models look pretty fresh, but by the time they get to Week Four, their skin is significantly abused, tired, raw, dull and blemished. I tell normal women to ignore the reports of what artists use at fashion week to moisturize skin; it’s just too heavy for daily use. Grace Mastrodomenico uses L’Oréal Magic Lumi primer before she applies NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk, Maybelline Fit Me concealer, foundation, and powder.

Smoky Cat eyes made easy:

To create a very simple and easy smoky eyes makeup look, dab a little bit of foundation on your lids (to create a base) and then, apply a soft grey or a color that you prefer like yellow then pencil on top of it. Blend it gently to create a “smudged and smoky” effect. Finish up with great mascara and you are done!

To achieve the high-drama, seductive deep pink lips, apply concealer all over your lips prior to applying your lipstick. Then trace the contour of your lips with pink pencil. Finish it all up by applying 2 pink lipsticks, one darker and another lighter. Use darker red all over your lips and apply the lighter red in the middle of your lips. For a more precise result use a lip brush to get a balanced and cute look.

Make it “pop”:

To achieve a very ‘bright eyes’ makeup look, apply your eye shadow with a damp brush, as shown. The color of your eye shadow will really pop. I hope you found this advice useful.
