NUEVA YORK  – No cabe duda que cualquier expresión artística es un puente para escuchar las historias desde otro punto de vista, para aprender de otras culturas, para enriquecer el alma y para despertar los sentidos de diferentes maneras.

La ciudad de Nueva York siempre se ha caracterizado por esa riqueza cultural donde los festivales, la danza, el cine, la música, el arte y la diversidad hacen que cada uno de los eventos en la Gran Manzana sean una maga de oportunidades para romper barreras.

Debido a la pandemia muchos de esos eventos han tenido que cancelarse o posponerse; sin embargo, la gran mayoría, como CortoCircuito, un festival gratuito que muestra cortos de España, latinoamérica o de latinos en los Estados unidos,  traen la experiencia en línea.

CortoCircuito estará desde el 4 de junio hasta el 11 de junio trayendo una variedad de cortos con un programa para enriquecer y aprender sobre la creatividad de artistas latinoamericanos y las historias de estos países llenos de cultura. El programa viene en colaboración del Instituto Cervantes en Nueva York.

En el programa el público encontrarán cortometrajes como

• Irma (Uruguay) de Alejo Schettini y Germán Tejeira

Ambulante Cine Documental Itinerante, as its original name suggests, usually tours around Mexico for two months and aims to bring film to those communities where film is not popular. Through the years, the festival has evolved and changed the way these communities see film as a form of art. Not only did people begin to show their interest in the films brought by Garcia and Luna, but children and young adults also expressed their inclination toward the process of filmmaking. 

The outcome of the interest shown by these people prompted García and Luna to create a program, where these young people could learn the craft of filmmaking and share it to the Mexican and foreign audiences through Ambulante.

Hence, for the ambitious festival funders, García and Luna, the idea of postponing the date of the celebration that ‘gives voice to the voiceless’ was simply unacceptable.

As an alternative, the organizers of the festival decided to continue with the program in an online format that made possible for film fans around the world to watch the documentaries. From April 29th to May 28th, at midnight, the festival released a documentary on their webpage to the general audience. To continue with the celebration of the film released, the organizers opened a virtual conversation the next day that included the filmmaker, the organizers, and the audience with the help of social media. 

It is worth noting that for the founders and everyone involved at Ambulante, it was essential that filmmakers, the press, and the audience continued to share their concerns, especially amidst these uncertain times. Postponing or shutting down the festival would have posited a disadvantage to those filmmakers who continue to make their voice heard through Cinema.

As García pointed out in the inaugural remote press conference of the festival:

 “Los documentales tocan los temas que son importantes y que tienen que ser hablados.” 

“Documentaries bring attention to themes that are important and that are worth talking about.”

Over the past few years, the festival not only became one of the most beloved events in Mexico, but it also became attractive to foreign audiences and toured the United States, El Salvador, and Colombia. 

This year, Ambulante Itinerant Documentary Cinema celebrated an unusual fifteen-anniversary that brought sixty-seven documentaries to the screen of millions of film fans around the globe. Twenty-five of those films were created by Mexican filmmakers and the other forty-two were made by filmmakers from all over the world.

With a diverse list of themes that included censorship, migration, and civil unrest in Mexico among many others, the festival continued to do what it first did in 2005- it made Cinema accessible.

El Sexto Festival Anual de Cine Dominicano en Nueva York se llevó a cabo del 25 al 30 de julio de 2017 y fue uno los eventos más grandes y mejor vistos en la ciudad de Nueva York. Uno de sus lemas fue: ¡Somos más que merengue y bachata, somos cine!

En el transcurso de 6 días en julio se presentó lo mejor del cine dominicano a nuestro público de Nueva York.

El Festival de Cine Dominicano de Nueva York está estuvo encargado de abrir la 6ª edición anual con la galardonada película

“CARPINTEROS” / “WOODPECKERS” del joven y talentoso cineasta José María Cabral.

El Festival de Cine y Derechos Humanos de Barcelona celebrará su decimotercera edición en Nueva York el 7, 8 y 9 de diciembre en Nueva York.

El acto inaugural tendrá lugar el miércoles 7 de diciembre, a las 6:00 pm, en la Legislatura del Condado de Nassau, (Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Ave, Mineola, NY 11501) y contará con la participación de su coordinador en Nueva York, José Martínez, y de las entidades colaboradoras.

Durante el mismo se proyectará, Frame by Frame, dirigido por Alexandria Bombach y Mo Scarpelli. El documental sigue a cuatro fotoperiodistas afganos mientras navegan por un emergente y peligroso paisaje mediático -reformulando Afganistán para el mundo y para ellos mismos. La producción muestra imágenes de archivo nunca antes vistas rodadas en secreto durante el régimen talibán.

La decimotercera edición del Festival de Cine y Derechos Humanos de Barcelona viene avalada por un éxito de convocatoria sin precedentes, que se traduce en cerca de 2.000 trabajos audiovisuales recibidos procedentes de todo el mundo.

La muestra del festival en Nueva York, que se lleva a cabo paralelamente el festival en Barcelona, presentará una selección de 3 largometrajes, pertenecientes a los géneros de ficción y documental.

Las obras seleccionadas abordan temas como el periodismo en tiempos de violencia, los ataques del 11 de septiembre y la vida de los inmigrantes en Nueva York.

Las sesiones se llevarán a cabo también en la Biblioteca de Freeport (144 W Merrick Rd, Freeport, NY 11520) los días 8 de diciembre a partir de las 7 pm y el 9 de diciembre a partir de las 6 pm.

El cierre del festival será el 9 de diciembre, donde se presentará la película Life is too Short, del director Antoine Allen. El Film hace una mirada a las vidas de cinco neoyorquinos que se ocupan de una variedad de desafíos y conflictos. Poco saben que todo terminará pronto.

Desde su primera edición, el festival continúa fiel a un doble compromiso: por un lado, promover y abrir espacios para la difusión y exhibición de trabajos cinematográficos que traten la defensa de los derechos humanos; y por otro, sensibilizar a la población y potenciar el respeto por la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos a partir de la divulgación de estas obras.

La muestra en Nueva York cuenta con el apoyo de la Cámara de Comercio de Colombia en Nueva York, Herb Flores, director de la Oficina de Minorías del Condado de Nassau, Carmen Pineyro, Concejal de la Alcaldía de Freeport y la Biblioteca Pública de Freeport.

It comes to no surprise that the talented Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence, has landed the role of Zelda Fitzgerald in director Ron Howards new Biopic, Zelda.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the film will focus on Fitzgerald’s desperation “to define herself through her own art, the film explores the question: can love exist between creative equals?” For those who aren’t aware of this beauty’s troubling past, author F. Scott Fitzgerald was in fact her husband, the “creative equal” Howard and his team will likely use to narrate her story.

Fitzgerald’s marriage was filled with mutual infidelity, jealousy, and alcoholism: main factors that contributed to the failure of the couple’s creative endeavor’s. She was her husband’s muse, and the inspiration for characters in his novels like Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby. However, he also used excerpts from her personal diary in his stories, which may have caused resentment in his wife, who strongly desired to establish herself independently through her own accomplishments.

Fitzgerald was overshadowed by her husband’s rise in fame as a successful writer, and her talent deserved more recognition. She suffered years of mental illness, and the married couple battled depression after their collaborative novel failed, leaving them in debt. Upon being diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Fitzgerald entered a clinic where she freely expressed herself through art and writing.

Lawrence is the perfect fit for this challenging role and she’s great at capturing the true essence of a character’s inner struggles. Former Lionsgate executive Alison Shearmur will join as producer of the project, alongside Lawrence, Justine Ciarrocchi, and Brian Oliver.
