Caravaggio’s “Salome with the Head of John the Baptist” and “Joseph’s Tunic,” by Velazquez, both recently restored, are just two of the gems included in a new exhibit at Madrid’s Palacio Real.
“From Caravaggio to Bernini: Masterpieces of the Italian 17th Century in the Royal Collections,” opens Tuesday.
The mere presence of “Salome” and “Joseph’s Tunic” in the same show would be enough to constitute a singular experience, according to Alfredo Perez de Armiñan, president of Spain’s National Heritage administration.
“Italian art from that era is widely dispersed and it is difficult to find pieces of this importance in a single institution,” he said.
Though centered on Caravaggio, the exhibit’s 71 pieces include paintings by artists such as Guido Reni, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, Lucas Jordan, Federico Barocci, Ludovico Carracci, Carlo Maratti and Jose de Ribera, along with sculptures by Bernini, Algardi, Duquesnoy and Fisher von Erlach.
