The World Health Organization, or WHO, announced on Friday that representatives of the pharmaceutical industry and scientists will meet between March 7-9 in Geneva to assess progress in research on the Zika virus.
The sharp increase in cases of infants with microcephaly and adults affected by Guillain Barre Syndrome has been associated with a simultaneous expansion of Zika in several countries in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
This cause-effect relationship, however, is not proven scientifically and experts are working on it.
At the meeting next week, participants will learn the latest updates in research and development of therapeutic products to address the spread of Zika.
In that sense, they will be informed about the products being worked on in the priority areas of diagnostics, vaccines, drugs and measures to control the mosquito which acts as carrier of this virus.
