Former Miss Turkey gets 14-month suspension for insulting president Erdogan

Miss Turkey 2006 Merve Buyuksarac was sentenced on Tuesday to 14 months in prison for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after sharing a satirical poem about him on social networks.
The court found 27-year-old Buyuksarac guilty of insulting a public official and she will have to serve the sentence if she reoffends.
The general prosecution had requested four and half years in prison for the model, who during the trial argued that she only shared the poem because it seemed funny and that at no time did she intend to insult Erdogan.
The sentence can still be appealed in which case the Supreme Court will consider it.
