FUNDarte presents The Garifuna Collective featuring Umalali

For an evening of authentic Caribbean music and culture in Miami!

As part of our No Borders series showcasing artists from around the world, FUNDarte is thrilled to present The Garifuna Collective featuring Umalali, The Garifunda Women Project, providing a rare opportunity to experience Garifuna music and culture in Miami on Jan. 27th / 8:30 p.m. & Jan. 28th / 3:00 p.m at Miami Dade County Auditorium (2901 W Flagler St., Miami, FL 33135)

Discover the musical heritage of the Garifuna, a culture that defies national borders and spans the Caribbean coast of Central America, with this exhilarating ensemble of female vocalists performing a contemporary tribute to the traditional Garifuna music, featuring an array of fiery Caribbean rhythms.  This is a rare opportunity to experience contemporary Garifuna roots music and performances as distinctive and spirited as the culture from which they spring.

The lead singers of the current incarnation of the group reflect an intergenerational approach, women with striking voices and engaging personalities, whose songs echoed with the joys and sorrows they had experienced during their lives.  Hailing from Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, Desiree Diego, Sofia Blanco and Chela Torres are three women whose songs draw on the wellsprings of Garifuna culture while echoing the joys and sorrows of contemporary life.

In addition to their vibrant performances, The Garifuna Collective will provide a workshop for local artists.

About the Garifuna Collective:

Since its inception the Garifuna Collective has consistently provided a uniquely rewarding experience – Garifuna music and dance performed by composers and musicians who push the boundaries of their dynamic, centuries old musical traditions and make it accessible to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.

And now the Garifuna Collective featuring the Umalali women singers continues to break new ground with performances that leave no doubt as to why UNESCO, in 2001, officially proclaimed the language, dance, and music of the Garifuna people of Central America as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”.

The band consists of the best musicians in the fertile Garifuna music scene. They bring together the deep cultural roots of Garifuna music, mixed with modern grooves, arrangements, and instruments. Unique hand drums, the “primera” and “segunda”, turtle shells and jawbones, guitars and bass. The musicians create a powerful energy on stage, building hypnotizing rhythms that form the backbone for the haunting melodies and powerful vocals that characterize the project.

The Garifuna Collective has performed in over 25 countries including the U.S., Canada, France, and Germany, and has produced one of the most celebrated Garifuna albums of all time, the acclaimed Wátina, recipient of WOMEX and BBC World Music Award, and voted by Amazon as the Number One World Music Album of All Time.
