Honor crimes continue despite Oscar for Pakistan’s documentary

Pakistan has registered two fresh honor crime cases in which three people have been killed, just days after Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy won an Oscar for a documentary on such crimes in the country.
A man who killed his two sisters for having relations with men, and a father who took his daughter’s life for having gone missing for five hours, have joined the list of honor crime cases, which are common in Pakistan.

“Mohammad Asif, 29, last night shot his sisters Fozia Bibi, 22, and Suriya Bibi, 24, when they were their grandmother in Sahiwal district (Punjab province) for not agreeing with their lifestyle,” district’s police official Tariq Mehmood told MLM.

Family and neighbors said it was a case of honor crime and Asif had on numerous occasions accused her sisters of having “relations with men,” Mehmood added.

The police have begun an operation to find Asif, who is on the run.

The suspect had killed his mother some years back, but was pardoned by his family and did not have to face trial, something permitted under Pakistani laws, according to Mehmood.

In the other crime, also in Punjab, a father shot his 18-year-old daughter Monday for having gone missing for five hours.

On Sunday, filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy won his second Oscar for “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” dealing with honor crimes in the country.

After watching the movie with members of the government, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised legislative measures against such crimes.

In 2015, 923 women were victims of honor crimes in Pakistan, according to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, which warns that the actual number could be much higher.
