“Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today,” which opens this week Friday in the British capital, showcases the diversity of artists’ interpretations of their countries.

“The exhibition does not attempt to present a single image of Latin America, but rather to show a multiplicity of voices and attitudes,” curator Pablo Leon de la Barra said of the show, set to run June 10-Sept. 4 at the South London Gallery.

“Under the Same Sun” comprises 50 works by 40 contemporary artists from 17 Latin America countries in a variety of media including drawings, sculpture, installations, performance, paintings and video.

The pieces, which are part of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, offer different approaches to understanding Latin America.

Some of the realities depicted include a history of colonialism, repressive governments, economic crises and social inequality.

“It is not possible to present a single Latin America because there exist and co-exist several Latin Americas, in plural,” Leon de la Barra said.

Argentine artist David Lamelas told that his video “El Dictador” (The Dictator) represents “politics’ arrogance and disconnection from the real world.”
