Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero became the first artist to exhibit his works at the promenade of Hong Kong’s Central district, one of the city’s landmark points overlooked by its most famous skyscrapers.

Nine giant bronze sculptures, created between 1982 and 2003, each over three meters tall and weighing at least two tons, will officially be on display for the public at the site between Friday and August 14, as part of an initiative by local authorities.

The result has been “spectacular,” Juan Camilo Montaña, director of ‘Botero in China’ – an initiative that has organized exhibitions of the Colombian artist’s work in China.

For Montaña, the Hong Kong outdoor exhibition concludes the Botero in China cycle.

Last November, Botero became the first living artist to exhibit his work at the Beijing National Museum, with over 80 paintings from his private collection.

In January, a total of 150 pieces – paintings as well as sculptures – went on display in Shanghai, and more than 1.3 million people reportedly visited both exhibitions.

Some of the sculptures on display in Hong Kong are the same as Shanghai, and follow the time-honored tradition of putting up the huge works on view across symbolic avenues of big cities such as New York and Paris.

As well as being a financial hub, Hong Kong also enjoys the status of being Asia’s art capital, given that it serves as the Asia operations center of some of the world’s foremost international art auction houses.

Montaña said other large Chinese cities had expressed their interest in hosting Botero’s works, but the sculptures “had already been assigned” for exhibitions in other places across the world.

Thursday’s inauguration was attended by Colombian Ambassador in China Carmenza Jaramillo, Botero’s son Fernando and his daughter Lina, as the artist had to skip the event due to health issues.
