An international cast led by Spain’s Santiago Segura and Cecilia Roth of Argentina is in Rio de Janeiro for shooting on the new television series “Supermax,” billed as a “trans-genre” production focused on how humans react to extreme situations.
“I call it ‘trans-genre’ because there’s a streak of adventure, a streak of romance and a streak of psychological thriller,” Argentine director Daniel Burman, whose work includes “Derecho de familia,”.
The story takes place at an abandoned prison in a desert region of an unnamed country. A set at Globo’s studios in Rio serves as the prison, while exterior shots are to be filmed Argentina.
The derelict penitentiary is hosting in a reality show presided over by the shadowy Orlando Saslake (Segura).
An accident at the start of the reality show production leaves Saslake and the contestants stranded, forcing them to face a series of dangers to survive.
“Supermax” is Burman’s first foray into television. The Argentine director won the Silver Bear award at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival for his film “El abrazo partido.”
A collaboration among Globo, Spain’s Mediaset, Mexico’s Azteca, and Argentina’s TVP, the series will air in Latin America and Spain.
