Puerto Rican artist Yvette Mattern brings a laser-light rainbow to Berlin

Puerto Rican artist Yvette Mattern’s laser-light rainbow installation is on view through April 30 over the iconic Victory Column in Berlin.
The new presentation of “Global Rainbow – Peace will win” uses seven rays of high specification laser light, representing the seven colors of the rainbow.

The rays are projected onto the night sky until midnight, converging on the crown of the statue at the top of the column, which stands 70 meters (229 feet) tall.

The work is a “visual translation of hope and peace,” Mattern says on her Web site.
“Global Rainbow” was first shown in New York in 2009. Since then, it has appeared in more than a dozen cities around the world.

Mattern, who is based in New York and Berlin, said she got the inspiration for the work from a rainbow she spotted at Walden Pond in Massachusetts.
