Spanish driver and McLaren Formula One team member, Fernando Alonso expressed that he is aware how lucky he is to have survived the violent crash that took place on Sunday during racing at the 2016 F1 Australian Grand Prix.
“I am aware that today I spent some of the luck remaining in life, I want to thank McLaren, the FIA for the safety on this cars. Also my colleagues and fans for the concern and unconditional support,” Alonso wrote on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.
The Spanish driver survived a horrifying crash during Sunday’s race, as he tried bypass the car of Haas Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez in lap 17; however, Alonso’s front tire bumped into Gutierrez’s left rear wheel, and thus, the Spaniard’s car flipped twice and crumbled to pieces before hitting a barrier at turn three of the Albert Park circuit.
Alonso, 34, was unhurt in the accident, just like Gutierrez, whose car suffered less damage.
Alonso, winner of the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship in 2005 and 2006, said
“I’m happy to be here, it was quite a scary crash.”
