Argentina and Panama advance with three points each at Copa America tournament

Angel di Maria and Ever Banega scored goals early in the second half to lead Argentina to a 2-1 win over defending champion Chile in a Centennial Copa America match played in Santa Clara, California.

The teams played evenly in the first half, but Argentina turned up the pressure in the second half on Chile, which was unable to respond.

Jose Pedro Fuenzalida scored Chile’s only goal in extra time in the Group D match.
The revenge factor was at play in the match for Argentina, which was beaten 4-1 by Chile in the 2015 Copa America final in Santiago.

In other Copa America action on Monday night, Panama pulled off a surprise win, beating Bolivia 2-1 in its Copa America debut in Orlando, Florida.

The match was played in the rains unleashed on central Florida by Tropical Storm Colin.
Blas Perez accounted for both of Panama’s goals, with his final score coming in the 87th minute.

Perez scored early in the match, but Bolivia’s Juan Carlos Arce evened the score at 1-1 at the start of the second half.

The match then turned into a defensive battle, with neither team yielding a score until Perez nailed the winning goal near the end of regulation time.

Argentina and Panama are at the top of the standings in Group D, with three points each, while Bolivia and Chile have no points.

On Friday, Chile will play Bolivia and Argentina will take on Panama.

Chile will go up against Panama and Argentina will play Bolivia on June 14.
