Crespo promoting tune inspired by tale of El Chapo and Kate del Castillo

Elvis Crespo is currently promoting “Escapate,” a song inspired by the relationship between Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and actress Kate del Castillo.
In a Tuesday interview with MLM, the Puerto Rican singer said that in writing “Escapate,” he did “like songwriters in the past: writing songs from daily events.”

“Escape from that prison, escape from that bad love. Come with me to the hiding place of rumba and taste; come with me through the tunnel where the sun was born,” are some of the lyrics to the song, which will be included on Crespo’s upcoming album “Mr. City.”

El Chapo, who until recently was the most wanted drug trafficker on the planet, established communication with Del Castillo because in 2012 she published a letter on Twitter in which she asked the capo to become her “hero” and do only good.

Del Castillo, who portrayed a drug cartel boss in the television series “La Reina del Sur,” participated along with actor Sean Penn in an interview with Guzman while he was on the run from the authorities after having fled from a maximum security prison through a tunnel.

According to Crespo, the idea of writing about the subject came to him when he was giving a public performance in Miami and someone asked him his opinion about it, causing him to reflect on the case, which – he said – was completely “crazy.”

“I did like many people do: I read everything that had been published and I became interested in knowing the details,” the musician said.

Airing last Friday on YouTube, the video on the tune has already received more than 20,000 views and, Crespo says, “it’s become a hit throughout the Americas and Spain.”

According to the Mexican government, contacts between Del Castillo and Penn and El Chapo contributed to law enforcement authorities being able to determine his location and capture him on Jan. 8.
