President Vladimir Putin launched a program to recruit volunteers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, a event also attended by two former soccer greats: Spain’s Carles Puyol and Russia’s Rinat Dasayev.

“I’m convinced we can ensure the highest possible level of organization, both for the athletes and the fans. They should feel they’re participating in a great sporting celebration. I’m counting on your support,” Putin told a group of volunteers at Moscow’s VDNKh trade show and amusement park, according to local media.

Putin said being a volunteer was more than putting on a uniform and being close to the sport’s biggest stars but also entailed offering “disinterested service,” as occurred at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The impression of Russia that visitors take back to their home countries will depend in large measure on the work of volunteers, said Putin, who was also joined at the event by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The organizing committee expects to recruit some 5,500 volunteers for the 2017 Confederations Cup and 15,000 more for the following year’s World Cup. Application forms for those interested in volunteering are now being accepted on FIFA.com.

Puyol, a member of the Spanish squad that won the 2010 World Cup, thanked Putin and Infantino for the invitation.

“I was in Russia before when I came with (FC) Barcelona, but back then we had no time to see (Moscow). We were focused on the game and just saw the hotel and the airport. So I’m happy to come back again and be able to see the city better,” the former star central defender said.
